If previous albums have focused on particular aspects of the Primitive Motion ‘thing’, with Lost Frequencies they’ve drawn a line in the sand, digging twenty-four songs out from their archives, all played exactly as you hear them, no overdubs, no excess; the moment of creation, unadorned.

An album of this length – over two hours – might read like a magnum opus, at first glance. But listening to Lost Frequencies is an entirely other experience, its relative bareness and fluidity cleaving to the diaristic and the documentarian. Rather than setting out with goal in mind and plan in hand, with Lost Frequencies, Primitive Motion arrive nowhere but land everywhere. The recordings here span almost four years, from December 2017 to November 2021, and they’re collected from the duo’s ongoing improvisatory meetings at Sandra Selig’s studio, Woodburn Laboratory, in Ferny Hills. It’s all first-take material, mostly captured on one mic.

Lost Frequencies moves at its own pace – taken in its full breadth, it’s like one long exhale. While Primitive Motion have hinted at this kind of openness and playfulness before, they’ve never really stretched out quite to this extent on record. But within this, there’s also a curious intimacy, a feeling that as listeners, we’re eavesdropping on a process unfolding. It’s a reminder that blueprints for buildings are often more evocative than the constructions themselves, that sketches offer hints that finished works don’t realise; Lost Frequencies works by inference and through intimation. Someone left a gift on the table, you don’t know who, and you’re not sure it’s for you; this only makes you more curious.

Through Lost Frequencies, Primitive Motion uncover something that’s simultaneously deeply archaic and vitally modern, and while there aren’t too many reference points for what they’re doing, there are maybe a few lines to draw between this music and singular voices like Pascal Comelade, Nico circa Desertshore, Biota, Księżyc, Arthur Russell, Kemialliset Ystävät. There are similarities in sound, sure - the hum of reed organ on “Curiosities of the Sky” or melodica on “Dimensional Fans”, in conjunction with Selig’s levitating voice, are audio madeleines – but Primitive Motion share with these artists, most of all, both devotion to craft, and surety of focus. Over time, a luxury afforded by Lost Frequencies, Primitive Motion take the music elsewhere – which is the only place it really should go.

- Jon Dale

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0600/3874/2150/files/Primitive_Motion_-_Lost_Frequencies_2CD.jpg?v=1753739872
juho-toivonen-lapsikuninkaan-fanfaari
Juho Toivonen - Lapsikuninkaan Fanfaari

Juho Toivonen
Lapsikuninkaan Fanfaari
Discreet Music
Sweden, 2025
LP

The young Finnish artist Juho Toivonen’s second LP for Gothenburg’s Discreet Music unfolds like a vivid dream under a heavy blanket while sunlight presses up against the curtains. The album is in stereo, with a richer, more mature palette that includes trumpet contributions from Raimo Sinnemäki on tracks 1 and 4. The inclusion of vocals — more present here than in past works — adds another human layer to its ghostly, fragmented atmosphere. At its core, Lapsikuninkaan Fanfaari is an exercise in stretching time and shaping memory’s shifting terrain. Toivonen describes his music as something akin to the faded recollection of a melody – what music might sound like when recalled after years of experiencing silence.

This blurred approach to sound is underscored by the use of an off-key Walheim piano, a recurring presence in his recordings, and the warmth of a four-track tape recorder, lending the album its organic, tactile quality. Inspirations range from personal touchstones — childhood, stuffed animals, bridges, love, and hate. Much like with the previous two long players Toivonen’s creative process remains rooted in improvisation, with compositions emerging from spontaneous gestures before being sculpted into their final form. This release marks the second chapter in a trilogy — a self-mythological journey that begun in birth and early childhood via Sisarusten Toistuva Uni, and now unfolds tenderly into imagined futures and alternative realities.

Lapsikuninkaan Fanfaari is not just an album but an invitation — to step into a world where memory is fluid, where time folds in on itself, and where music is less a fixed entity than a ghostly echo of what once was, or what could have been.

Recorded during autumn 2024 and mastered by Tyko Tuulivaara. Here's where you understand it's only dreaming. The band’s declaration, rather a mantra, like a philosophical postulate, proves to be the best definition of this elegant trio. The gang's first discographic incarnation blended the desert and the electricity, recorded on a magic carpet, with promises of sequels, of evasion we should say. It's even better this time, as the language spoken here grows deeper with each live. The permanent mutation of HWYUIOD's sound reflects the human triangle at work. Ears fed on electronic hypnosis records, shoegaze lava flows, free music or anything solid that the avant-garde can offer, the amalgam is inevitably fruitful in dementia. Alan Briand (Shelter), Tom Val (Orion) and Thomas Riguelle seize upon an idiom of the edges, where slacker rock and slow-core invite themselves into the lore. Scarred ambient is always present, but beyond the magnificent kraut-racket, the impression of hearing a Turkish version of Fugazi imposes itself, with the ghost of Don Cherry not far away, laying his hand on the frail shoulders of our heroes in the making. An obvious synthesis of an era, a symptom of a time when all kinds of exciting music coagulate, HWYUIOD stuns a little more with panache. Distorted voices, celestial swirls, we dive right back in. We think of the great ones… The spirit is perched on the roof of the Fondation Maeght, not far from La Monte Young considering a collaborating with Neu! on an album to be released on Sub Pop.
