For the initiated, the very existence of this Gothenburg relic is enough to evoke a frisson: a faithful reissue of the very first Förlag För Fri Musik release, which was also the debut of the underground supergroup Enhet För Fri Musik, comprised of Dan Johansson (Sewer Election, Neutral, Amateur Hour), Sofie Herner (Leda, Neutral), Gustaf Dicksson (Blod), and Hugo Randulv (Amateur Hour, solo). Aesthetically, it’s a dead ringer for the OG from 2015, with striking handmade sleeves in varying colorways. Whew.
Then there’s the music. Låt Oss Vada Genom All Ängslan Tillsammans (Google Translate: Let’s Wade Through All the Pain Together—WHEW) is a lonesome midnight psych-folk album collapsing in on itself: spindly guitar, deadpan vocals, and wheezing harmonica (of all things) whistling over an ominous tape-noise void. They employ the signature jump cuts and juxtapositions of later albums, with forays into self-taught free jazz & cranky no-wave, but overall, the various ingredients feel more cooked together on this one, all part of the same heady brew. Whether you receive this as a homecoming or an initiation, it’s essential underground business by any reckoning. What a way to launch a scene.
