The process is still one of organic way-finding, where each sound is like a footstep, determined by the one preceding it and dictating the following, rather than following any pre-ordained map.

The difference here being that this release was conceived as an ode to my mum, Brigitte Bowman, who passed away in December 2025. I started assembling some of these tracks in preparation for a live set supporting Eddy Current Suppression Ring in March 2026, grief still heavy in my subconscious and informing much of what I made. Perhaps this kind of sentimental ambient music is also intended as a tonic for my own feelings, a need to create the calm that I want for myself and for my mum, beyond suffering.

The sound of birdsong and their company was important to my mum throughout her life and their company now serves as an ever-present reminder for me. A vessel through which I continue to acknowledge her presence daily, hence they figure largely in these recordings. Admittedly, my mum always preferred the music of sad country types like Townes Van Zandt and Gene Clark, but whenever I played her Troth pieces featuring bird song, they resonated and calmed her. So, it is not a stretch to make these pieces as something that she could have had on in the background while she looked out the window at the magpies she had befriended.

bb's flip-side, the 20 minute 'Three Ferns', was commissioned to accompany the installation of Chris Nichols' light-based artwork 'Daloy' in Southern Tasmania. While it was primarily conceived to serve this function, the sounds and intention naturally fit alongside what I had already been assembling as the DNA of bb. Again, I feel like my subconscious was at work.

The brief for this piece was to include birdsong from Tasmania, to imbue the piece with a strong domestic identity, so also aligned in this sense. It foregrounds various recordings of avian life in Knocklofty Reserve, the foothills of Kunanyi, Franklin Forest and Sykes Sanctuary in northern Tasmania. All beautiful spots that I suggest you visit, if you have the time and inclination.

I've already started developing some ideas for new Ossifa recordings that will likely bear little resemblance to these, but it was important to release these as a document of a feeling. Grief is an extremely strange process and, obviously, an individual one. I think that making something new, whatever it may be, is one of the best responses we can have to loss.
