Another perfectly turned, perfectly tuned, perfectly timed album from Carla dal Forno. The Australian underground pop auteur is more like a potter than a conceptual artist. The forms are established in advance; the artistry is in the details and the execution. Post-punk pop songs: drum machines, rubbery bass lines, synths, pads, and a voice to match the wistful longing of the tunes. The needs expressed are elemental: love, lust, desire, and especially the desire to be desired. The fact that this was recorded in “a studio housed inside a partially abandoned hospital” initially feels at odds with the ease and charm of these songs, but it makes more and more sense the longer you allow yourself to be haunted by them.
