Lo-fi classical is hardly a new phenomenon: listen to any recording before the 1950s and there’s sure to be the wooliest blanket of shellac surface noise. But whereas underground strains of rock and folk have long embraced the imperfections of consumer analogue recording technology, few classical musicians have explored that path intentionally: even the most avant-garde contemporary compositions tend to be captured in pristine fidelity.
Which is why there’s something both cozily familiar and a bit uncanny about the music of Cop Tears, a contemporary chamber music trio that records to noisy tape in an apartment: lo-fi, imperfectionistic, and gloriously under-rehearsed. The compositions date from the mid-15th century to 2016, and are all approached with the same soft step: sounded out, experienced in real time, given life and air to breathe, complete with slip-ups and attendant giggles. But there’s nothing ironic or careless about it. Rather, it feels like the trio loves this music too much to sand it down to dull perfection—to make a dutiful Pygmalion of it. The results, as Honest Jon’s puts it, are “Pure loveliness. Proper music-making.” One of the year’s modest very best.
