From the rustic, homespun inner-world of his debut mini-album Preludes, Flaer’s compositions for piano, cello, guitar, strings, and field recordings grow up and outward on Translations, both more richly orchestrated and more ephemeral. Maybe it’s the title of the second track, “Starling Descends,” but I keep thinking of a formation of birds at dusk, a unified multiplicity changing direction by its own grace and logic.
