WOW—a breath of fresh air from a Barcelona-based duo who cite influences ranging from Alice Coltrane to Steve Reich. The jaunty percussion & sax opener “Bytheriver” is both a bit of a red herring and an essential piece of the puzzle, opening the door for a trip that includes dreamy concrète, Robert Ashley-style spoken passages, curious organ works, sun-flecked acoustic reveries, and periodic returns to the minimalist chamber-folk-jazz of the opener, like Moondog in a smoking jacket or Julius Eastman on his day off. The nicest surprise to cross my desk in a minute.
