Jocy de Oliveira’s career began as a childhood piano prodigy premiering works by 20th-century masters. She also released an experimental Bossa Nova album and innovative electroacoustic compositions she called estórias, or stories. This release collects syncretic compositions from her operas of the ‘80s and ’90s. At its heart are two extended “ragas,” landing between avant composition and pan-cultural psych freak-outs. Highbrow, yes. It also rules.
