Every release on Stern Records expands my notion of what this mighty little Brooklyn label is about. Their fourth is a live set capturing Daly and Weinberg’s improvised “unison” performances on clarinet and guitar.
Like a highbrow version of that Garth and Kat sketch on SNL, the fun is all in the inevitable failure to follow the leader—a Ouija board effect where the melody seems to develop a mind of its own. And not only the fun, but the art: the grainy impasto of inevitable imprecision lends texture and compelling strangeness to the ever-warping carpet patterns of their attempted monophony.
