My favorite Jolly Disc? Such an English record—droll, grey, straitlaced, charming, with a bit of the urbane romanticism of The Blue Nile’s Hats. Hard to pick a favorite, from the cinematic, lovesick opener “Submission,” with its slow-mo bongos and searching vocals, to the dancehall swagger of “Everybody Knows,” which pairs a genuinely tough bass and drum groove with canned synth horns. Sometimes I wonder if producer Guy Gormley challenged himself to stick to the presets on this one—like watching someone build a modernist sculpture out of Legos.
