In conjunction with the release of his wonderful new album unworld.afterpop on Concentric Circles, Sternpost's Petter Herbertsson offers up the first entry in the brand new Seasonal Work Guesthouse mixtape series. What catches his ear seems to be the rare meeting of aptitude and outsiderism, art pop that’s as stylistically askew as it is formally accomplished. There’s also a consistent strain of theatricality, a Brecht & Weil flair suggesting a European analogue of Stephin Merritt’s obsession with the Great American Songbook. Despite the mixtape’s wide stylistic range—from the archest art pop, to upscale vocal jazz, to homespun chamber music, to shambling post-punk with the wheels coming off—it’s full of songs brimming with emotions threatening to overspill their bounds.
