Sugar Plant
Signature Collection Volume 1
Tremolo Records
Japan, 2026
LP (limited clear mint green vinyl)

Sugar Plant’s first album came out in 1995, making them contemporaries of Mazzy Star, Slowdive, and late-period Cocteau Twins. This retrospective compilation—one of two planned volumes, and the first time on vinyl for most of these tunes—stretches back just as far and extends to the present, proving the new-to-me Japanese dreampop outfit to be both worthy peers and able torchbearers of the melodic soft-touch shoegaze of the aforementioned. Nailing the misty roadhouse feel is one thing; what lingers is the strength of the songwriting. Be prepared to give the rest of your collection a little time off. This will be hard to keep off the turntable.

FROM THE LABEL:

Spanning the full arc of sugar plant’s career—from their 1995 debut hiding place to their latest release one dream, one star—a carefully curated collection album is now set for release across two analog LP titles.

Following the global acclaim of their new album released this March, this long-awaited best-of arrives on vinyl for fans worldwide.

Built around shimmering, wave-like textures that rise from stillness, the sound drifts and swells like eddies in motion, illuminated by vocals that carry a quiet, almost divine radiance. These elements bring each track into sharp relief, forming the core of this collection. Reframing 30 years of work from the present moment, the album gently reveals the expansive sonic landscape that defines sugar plant.

This release comes from a Tokyo-based creative design studio—run by a florist/designer in Higashi-Azabu—who previously reissued the remastered CD edition of sugar plant’s trance mellow. Conceived not only as a music release but as a spatial, immersive analog work, the record invites a deeper mode of listening.

As the needle drops, sugar plant’s singular soundscape emerges with a sense of clarity and soft illumination—unfolding with a visual-like expansiveness. In an era where music is often consumed digitally, this collection offers a broader perspective, resisting easy genre classification while presenting a deeply considered sonic world.

Limited to 300 copies on colored vinyl. A rare edition that seeks to translate and visualize sound as a complete work. Newly mastered for vinyl, the two-record set can be experienced as four sides or as a unified whole—inviting you to watch the record spin, read along with the lyrics, and engage with the artwork as you listen.

From Japan to the world, this is the sound born from the unique creative partnership at the heart of sugar plant.

This album will not be available as a standard digital release.
