Blurring the line between mixtape and sound collage, and haunted by the ghost of television, Zen Mathematics layers ephemeral broadcast echoes over crumbling minimal psychedelia.
Disembodied voices expound on concert videos, new tape-recording devices, guided meditations, a conspiracy to kill James Bond, how Jesus helped them recover from heroin, “really great motion picture figures,” and why they’re unimpressed by the prospect of a moon landing…
Listening to this tape, I’m reminded that the past is never where you put it. It wriggles out of any straightforward summaries or explanations, because it was never just one way. The angel of history is forever glancing over its shoulder, and the 20th century looks stranger and stranger as it recedes into the distance. Decades worth of radio waves died on impact and simply melted into air, but an endless few still swirl around us, twinkling out their accidental half lives like stars you can only still see because they’re so unfathomably far away.
