Hard to think of another act that has literalized the idea of “underground” music more compellingly than Rory Salter’s beloved no-fi bedroom project The Sprigs. Following a CD-R, an expanded tape reissue of the same, and a second tape, For Red Riverbank is his first proper LP. What may have seemed like quirks on the first release—the Wind and the Willows references, the old TV clips of British labour politics—turn out to be the project’s core. With amazing cover art suggesting classic ’70s British folk LPs, For Red Riverbank seems to be a celebration of the recent past, caked though it may be in loam. The hopeful ideals of the past aren’t lost, just buried beneath six feet of tape hiss. Now is the time of moles.
