I’m obsessed with TLF Trio’s debut full-length, Sweet Harmony, a tasteful, restrained set of minimal, melodic chamber music for piano, cello, and nylon string guitar. Their follow-up, Desire, is a big departure, briefly hinted at on the interstitial New Songs & Variations EP featuring reworks by Moritz Von Oswald. Here, they’ve simplified their musical vocabulary, trading the knotty structures of art music for the pleasing repetitions of downtempo electronica. Imagine a beat tape on ECM and you’re halfway to the pleasure center of this dreamy, varied, artful, endlessly repeatable LP.
