A world-building comp from the new London label Ó Mhaidin. The more familiar names—Old Saw, Thorn Wych, Tarawangsawelas, Fiesta en el Vacio—suggest both a high pedigree and a coherent sensibility, all artists who nurture folk traditions rooted in underground mulch. They each turn out first-rate cuts, but as with the best compilations, it’s the newcomers who catch the ear and connect the dots, from the smoke-wreathed dream folk of La Zza Ro’s “White Horses,” to the organic kraut-psych of Angel Hunt & Lou Venturini’s “AmlaBerries,” the squiggly acid step of Nick Mackrory’s “Swivel,” the front porch slide-guitar rumination of Climax Golden Twins’ “I'm A Comin' Lord, I'm A Comin’,” and the golden hour fingerstyle guitar of Satan Club’s “North (Demo).” Gauntlet thrown.

Toothpaste For Your Elephant marks the first release for London based Ó Mhaidin. Unfolding over 16 tracks, 3 of which are newly mastered reissues seeing vinyl for the first time, the compilation is born from a love of 80’s underground cassette culture, an homage to late nights spent listening to junked-up Americana, disregarded DIY oddities and neo no-wave.

Featuring contributions from Old Saw, Tarawangsawelas, Kulku, Fiesta En El Vacío, Thorn Wych and more, Ó Mhaidin’s debut is released digitally and as a double LP with artwork by Nell Alcraft, and includes an A5 interactive ‘Find The Folklore’ insert - a 'Where's Wally' style game to play in tandem with the artwork.

Who is this for? Who knows? Fellow night owls, midnight wranglers of the skuzzy and off-centre, but mostly those with a deep desire to develop a decent sleeping pattern before it’s too late.
